Our measures to the environment

The vision

Our aim is to make the Earth a better place to live

Ever since the corporate slogan "Our aim is to make the Earth better place to live" was announced on the 40th company anniversary in 1970, Iwatani has been deeply committed to placing "Gas and Energy"at the heart of their environmental management policies. Gas resources are, after all, one of the earth's most precious gifts to mankind. In 1998, the company drafted the Iwatani Group Environmental Charter, so that the companies in the group would have ideals to strive for.

Major Offices Gaining ISO14001 Certificate

Our head offices in Osaka and Tokyo, the Technology Center in Shiga Prefecture, and 16 major offices (14 block branches and 2 branch offices) nationwide have acquired the internationally recognized ISO14001 environmental management certification, and we continue to strengthen environmental activities throughout the group.

Sustainability Report

Since 2004, Iwatani has been producing a publication entitled " Sustainability Report", making information contained in it - relating to environmental, social, and financial aspects of corporate activities - available to the public. The earlier "Environmental Report" was revised and enlarged to make this new style of report. The current report responds to recent social demands for including information on sustainability, as well as demands for releasing corporate information to society about Iwatani group companies and how deeply committed they have been to society and the environment.

Iwatani's Environmental Activities

Striving for goods and activities which are "Eco-friendly Products"

Iwatani regards any product or technical development that can resolve, mitigate, or reduce environmental impact as "Eco-friendly Products ", and is contributing to environmental improvements in its day-to-day business by setting appropriate business targets and research and development goals. As many as 70 products and activities were identified as being Eco-friendly Products in 2004 (61 products and 9 research and development projects), including LNG, LPG, wind power generation systems (clean energy), cogeneration (a power-thermal generation system), GHP (a Gas Air-conditioning System), Dynaguard (Combustion Hazard Elimination Equipment for Semiconductor Gases), CIF3 (Cleaning gas, with a zero-warming coefficient, for semiconductor production equipment), Aqua-make (a sewage re-circular and re-use system), and many others.

Promoting Eco-efficient use of Energy

Before it can be used, energy from LP gas, LNG, and other sources, has to be converted to electricity or heat. Keeping energy losses to a minimum when converting it to electricity or heat, and using that energy efficiently, results in energy savings and a more effective use of limited resources. "Power Generation at home" one example - miniaturized gas-engine cogeneration system in a home utilizes both electricity and hot water with minimum loss. Energy savings of up to about 25% can be made compared to other gas water heater currently being used. Furthermore, the latest, highly efficient gas water heater utilizes latent heat which, until today, was always wasted when it was lost with exhaust gases. This type of heater realizes efficiency improvements of about 15% over conventional gas water heaters. Iwatani has been making these and other efforts to develop, and introduce and widely as possible, the most efficient equipment possible, thereby making the optimum use of scarce energy resources.
